Reserve Bank of India Manages Record 127 Billion Diaspora Inflow
The Reserve Bank of India is evaluating tools to absorb a 10 trillion rupee liquidity surplus following record diaspora inflows of 127 billion dollars.
The Reserve Bank of India is evaluating measures to manage a liquidity glut in the banking system after India received a record 127 billion dollars in diaspora inflows. This surge created a surplus of nearly 10 trillion rupees, pushing the overnight rate below the benchmark rate and complicating the central bank's monetary policy objectives.
To absorb the excess cash, the central bank is considering several tools, including increased issuance of treasury and cash management bills, longer-term variable reverse repo auctions, or a hike in the incremental cash reserve ratio. The Reserve Bank of India scheduled meetings with select lenders on September 3, 2026, to discuss these specific liquidity management strategies.
While the inflows provide a larger reserve to defend the national currency, the central bank faces the challenge of absorbing liquidity without distorting the foreign exchange forward curve. Additionally, officials must ensure these actions do not push up bond yields during a period of global market selloffs.
