Sam Altman Argues DRAM Should Prioritize Cloud Over PCs

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims allocating DRAM to personal computers is inefficient and should be shifted to cloud data centers to maximize global silicon utilization.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argued during an interview on the Cheeky Pint podcast that the current global allocation of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) is inefficient. He stated that it is "quite terrible" to have limited DRAM supplies sitting in personal computers where they are used only a small fraction of the time, whereas cloud data centers can ensure maximum utilization in a supply-constrained environment.

This position coincides with aggressive procurement strategies by OpenAI, which has reportedly sought to secure approximately 40 percent of global RAM production through 2029. This includes deals for roughly 900,000 DRAM wafers per month from suppliers such as Samsung and SK Hynix to support massive infrastructure projects like Stargate.

Critics argue that Altman's stance defends a closed-source business model by discouraging local AI inference, which would reduce consumer reliance on paid subscriptions. These procurement efforts have contributed to global component shortages and rising prices for consumer electronics, including phones and laptops. In a related shift toward digital-first hardware, Sony announced plans to end Blu-ray support in 2027 and transition to fully digital PS5 consoles.
