Nigeria Demands Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at UN
Nigeria called for the complete removal of nuclear weapons during a United Nations General Assembly meeting to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
The Government of Nigeria called for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons during a high-level meeting at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Speaking to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Permanent Representative Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim stated that the total removal of these weapons is the only absolute guarantee against their use.
Ibrahim asserted that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons, has never pursued a nuclear program, and does not consider such arsenals necessary for national security. He urged nuclear-weapon states to honor their disarmament obligations under Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, warning that the modernization of nuclear arsenals increases the risk of catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
While advocating for global disarmament, Ibrahim affirmed Nigeria's support for the application of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes in energy and healthcare. He cited the Treaty of Pelindaba as a successful model for maintaining Africa as a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
