Russia Deploys Jet-Powered Drones to Strike Kyiv Infrastructure

Russia is using high-speed jet drones to strike Kyiv, forcing Ukraine to develop interceptor drones as traditional air defenses fail to reach the aircraft.

The Federal Government of Russia has intensified its air campaign against Kyiv by deploying new jet-powered attack drones. These aircraft travel at approximately 600km/h and reach altitudes of 10km, allowing them to outpace the capabilities of the Mriya volunteer air-defense formation. Mriya's Soviet-era and American-made machine guns cannot track the drones' speed or reach their altitude.

These drones have repeatedly struck bridges across the Dnipro and disrupted electricity and water supplies in the capital. Ukraine's current interception rate for these weapons is between 50% and 60%, which has forced a reliance on expensive F-16 fighter aircraft to defend the city.

In response, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and private firms are racing to develop high-speed interceptor drones. Stanislav Hryshyn of General Cherry noted that a shortage of small jet engines, which Russia sources from China, remains a primary obstacle to matching Russian production capacity. Hryshyn admitted that Ukrainian forces "were caught sleeping" by the deployment of these jet-powered Shaheds.
