Nithya Raman Defeats Karen Bass for Los Angeles Mayor

City Councilmember Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a tight race, becoming the first mayor of South Asian descent in Los Angeles history.

City Councilmember Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass to become the next mayor of Los Angeles. Raman, a Democratic Socialist and urban planner, secured approximately 52 percent of the vote, marking the first time a person of South Asian descent has held the office. Bass conceded the race on Thursday morning, committing to a "smooth and seamless transition."

The election was a tight contest that shifted as ballots were processed. Bass held a narrow lead on election night, but Raman overtook her as more mail-in ballots were tabulated. The race served as a referendum on Bass's first-term record, particularly her handling of the 2025 Palisades Fire. Bass faced significant criticism for being in Ghana during the disaster and for allegations that she attempted to water down the subsequent after-action report to conceal staffing failures.

Throughout the campaign, Raman focused on a platform of systemic change to fix a "broken city," pledging to reduce street homelessness by 50% by 2028. Bass emphasized her experience and the progress of her Inside Safe program. The candidates also clashed over public safety, with Raman suggesting the removal of the police chief—a move Bass called reckless ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Raman's victory was supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, who narrowly voted to maintain their endorsement of her just before the election. She drew strong support from younger voters, while Bass relied on the city's political establishment and older residents.
