AstraZeneca Launches Restructuring Plan Following Strong Third-Quarter Profits

AstraZeneca is implementing a three-year restructuring program to save $1.5 billion annually for reinvestment into its drug pipeline and AI technologies.

AstraZeneca has launched a three-year restructuring program titled Reshaping for Sustainable Growth to reduce annual costs by $1.5 billion. The company intends to reinvest these savings into its pipeline of over 180 projects and transformative technologies to reach an annual sales target of $80 billion by 2030. The overhaul is expected to incur up to $2 billion in one-off restructuring charges by 2029.

The announcement follows a strong third-quarter financial report where the company beat analyst expectations. Total group revenue rose 7% to $16.2 billion, while pre-tax profits increased 22% to $3.96 billion. Growth was primarily driven by the oncology division, specifically drugs such as Tagrisso and Imfinzi, which accounted for 48% of total revenue. These gains offset sales declines for Farxiga and Brilinta caused by pricing pressures in China and generic competition.

Chief Financial Officer Aradhana Sarin stated that the company is integrating artificial intelligence across all operations, including drug discovery and manufacturing. While the program involves reorganizing some areas and making some R&D roles redundant, Sarin noted that the company does not expect to shrink its overall headcount. AstraZeneca also reported spending over $4 billion this year on business development and smaller acquisitions to access new technologies.

Strategically, the company expects the United States to provide half of its 2030 revenue and plans to invest $15 billion in China by the same deadline. The financial results and growth strategy triggered the company's largest one-day share rally in a year, with stocks rising approximately 6% to £138.
