ChangXin Memory Technologies Expands Into NAND Flash Market

ChangXin Memory Technologies is establishing a NAND flash memory R&D center in Beijing to compete with Samsung and Yangtze Memory Technologies.

ChangXin Memory Technologies is expanding its operations into the flash memory (NAND) market, moving beyond its current specialization in dynamic random access memory (DRAM). The Chinese chipmaker is establishing a research institute and a research-and-development production line in Beijing to develop NAND chips specifically for supercomputers and AI servers.

This strategic shift places the company in direct competition with domestic rival Yangtze Memory Technologies and global leader Samsung Electronics. The expansion comes as a global memory shortage is expected to last through 2027, fueled by high demand for AI infrastructure and restricted capital spending on NAND capacity.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Chinese government to achieve semiconductor self-sufficiency. This push for domestic independence is intensified by export restrictions imposed by the United States government, which have limited China's access to high-bandwidth memory chips and strategic technologies.
