Domestic Travel Bookings Rise Despite Record Labor Day Gas Prices

Domestic travel bookings for the 2026 Labor Day weekend increased by 4% over the previous year, according to data from AAA. This growth occurs despite a general rise in travel costs, including a 2% increase in average domestic round-trip airfare to $790 and a 9% rise in domestic hotel prices.

Fuel costs have seen the most significant jump, with GasBuddy predicting a record-high national average for regular unleaded gas at $4.03 per gallon. This represents an 87-cent increase from the previous year. GasBuddy attributes these prices to global tensions affecting the availability of crude oil and refined products rather than typical supply and demand cycles.

While domestic travel is up, international airfare and cruise departures from U.S. ports decreased by 4%. Local venues, such as Kings Island, are using the holiday weekend to conclude summer events and establish deadlines for 2027 season pass renewals.
