Denmark Revises Second-Quarter GDP Growth Up to 0.9 Percent

Statistics Denmark raised its second-quarter GDP growth estimate to 0.9 percent, driven by increased production from Danish companies operating abroad.

Statistics Denmark revised the second-quarter GDP growth for Denmark upward to 0.9 percent, a significant increase from the initial estimate of 0.3 percent. While this figure represents a moderation from the 1.7 percent growth recorded in the first quarter, the annual growth for the period was revised up to 5.7 percent from 4.6 percent.

The growth was primarily driven by a 1.5 percent increase in gross fixed capital formation, particularly within intellectual property rights, construction, and civil engineering, alongside increases in imports and exports. Las Olsen of Danske Bank attributed the strong performance to rising production by Danish companies abroad, specifically citing the expanded medicine production of Novo Nordisk.

Labor market data showed employment rose 0.2 percent during the second quarter, with the gross unemployment rate holding steady at 3.1 percent in August. Erik Bjørsted of the Danish Union of Metalworkers noted that employment figures provide a clearer sign of economic performance than GDP, which he stated can fluctuate and carry uncertainty from quarter to quarter.
