German States Ease Truck Bans to Counter River Shipping Delays

Several German states have temporarily eased restrictions on truck traffic, permitting freight vehicles to use motorways on Sundays and public holidays. This measure aims to mitigate supply chain disruptions resulting from low river water levels, which have significantly hampered the movement of cargo shipping.

The Federation of German Industries welcomed the decision as evidence that the federal government can act decisively in an extreme situation. Conversely, environmental groups contend that the low water levels are a result of global warming and that increasing road traffic fails to address the root cause of the crisis.

The Federal Association for Road Haulage and Logistics cautioned that the rule change does not expand the amount of available driving time. The association emphasized that drivers and companies must still adhere to existing driving and rest time regulations.
