Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa Addresses UN Amid Domestic Crisis

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday morning. While al-Sharaa has secured sanctions relief and improved his international standing since his previous appearance, he returns to the global stage facing acute domestic instability.

Economic hardship has triggered widespread protests across Syria following government fuel price hikes. The U.N. World Food Program estimated that the cost of essential needs for Syrian families has increased by nearly 33 percent over the past year.

Security challenges persist in southern Syria, where the Cabinet of Israel is conducting military operations, raids, and detentions to establish a buffer zone. A U.N. commission warned these actions could amount to war crimes. Ibrahim Olabi, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, accused Israel of responding to diplomatic engagement with military violations.

Diplomatic tensions are further strained by a rivalry between Israel and Turkey, a close ally of the Syrian government. Although the United States has mediated talks between Syria and Israel, these efforts have not yet produced a security agreement or an Israeli withdrawal from the south.
