BJP Slams INDIA Bloc as TMC Faces Legislative Split

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a series of attacks on the stability of the INDIA opposition bloc and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) between June 7 and June 8, 2026. Ahead of a strategic meeting in New Delhi, BJP spokespersons Shehzad Poonawalla and Ajay Alok characterized the alliance as a figment of imagination lacking mutual trust. This criticism followed an announcement by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to boycott the New Delhi meeting, citing a betrayal by the Indian National Congress regarding political support in Tamil Nadu.

Simultaneously, a major political rift fractured the TMC in West Bengal. Expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee claimed the support of 58 MLAs—representing two-thirds of the party's legislative members—and replaced Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition after the Speaker of the West Bengal State Legislative Assembly granted the claim. BJP leaders, including Agnimitra Paul and Shankar Sikdar, asserted that the TMC is in shambles and that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lost control over her party.

As leaders from 23 parties eventually gathered in New Delhi to coordinate strategy, BJP members continued to describe the bloc as a sinking ship. Prakash Reddy attributed the TMC's disintegration to the leadership of Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee, predicting the party will become history in West Bengal.
