President Mahama Projects Bechem as Ghana's Chicken Capital

President John Dramani Mahama announced that Bechem will become Ghana's leading poultry hub following the completion of a new meat processing factory by early 2027.

President John Dramani Mahama projected that Bechem in the Ahafo Region will become the "chicken capital of Ghana" following the completion of a new poultry and meat processing factory. During an inspection tour of the project, the president noted that construction is currently 50 percent complete. The facility, which saw its sod cut on November 27, 2025, is expected to be commissioned by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

The factory aims to transform the local poultry industry by providing a reliable market for farmers and creating employment across the value chain. President Mahama encouraged local youth to enter poultry farming to supply the facility, which is intended to stimulate ancillary businesses such as feed supply and veterinary services. The initiative supports broader government goals to strengthen domestic agricultural production and reduce reliance on imported poultry.

This project follows the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative under the Feed Ghana Programme. Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku reported that this initiative contributed to an increase in Ghana's domestic poultry production, which rose from 4.6 percent to 22 percent as of May 2026.
