Pete Ricketts Leads Dan Osborn in Nebraska Senate Race

Republican Senator Pete Ricketts holds a six-point lead over independent challenger Dan Osborn in a New York Times/Siena University poll.

Republican Senator Pete Ricketts holds a six-point lead over independent challenger Dan Osborn in the Nebraska Senate race, according to a New York Times/Siena University poll. Ricketts leads 49 percent to 43 percent, though other data from Echelon Insights suggests a tighter margin with only a one-point lead for the incumbent.

Osborn, a union leader, has consolidated over 90 percent of Democratic support and leads among independent voters by nearly 30 points. His candidacy followed a July decision by Democratic nominee Cindy Burbank to withdraw from the race to support his bid. Despite this, Osborn faces a perception hurdle, as 55 percent of polled Nebraskans—and 78 percent of Trump voters—view him as a Democrat rather than an independent.

Ricketts maintains strong support among men, older voters, and white working-class voters. The poll reflects a broader political climate in the state where Republican satisfaction stands at 45 percent, compared to just over 25 percent for Democrats. Analysis suggests the conservative lean of the results may be influenced by midterm turnout patterns, as the survey found no significant Democratic turnout advantage among previous voters.
