TransAlta Sells Oklahoma Wind Stake and Buys Colorado Gas Plants

TransAlta Corporation sold a minority stake in Oklahoma wind assets for $305 million and acquired Colorado gas facilities for $1 billion to rotate capital into core regions.

TransAlta Corporation executed two major portfolio adjustments on October 22, 2026, to rotate capital into core geographies and support growth amid rising North American power demand. The company sold a 49 percent minority ownership interest in its 500 MW Oklahoma wind portfolio, which includes the White Rock West, White Rock East, and Horizon Hill facilities, to Ares Infrastructure funds for $305 million USD. TransAlta will maintain operational oversight of these wind assets through a long-term management agreement.

Simultaneously, the company completed a $1 billion USD acquisition of Mountain Peak Power LLC and Canyon Peak Power LLC from Blackstone, Inc. This transaction adds two fully-contracted natural gas-fired peaking facilities totaling 318 MW located near Denver, Colorado.

CEO Joel Hunter stated that these moves strengthen the company's balance sheet and support accretive growth opportunities. Specifically, the capital will be used for the Centralia conversion and Alberta data center projects as electrification and onshoring increase power demand across the continent.
