New Zealand Election Polls Show Tight Race for Government

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins face a finely balanced general election on November 7 with the Opportunity party as a potential kingmaker.

New Zealanders will vote in a general election on November 7 to determine the next government. Incumbent Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and his centre-right National party, currently governing in coalition with ACT and New Zealand First, face a challenge from the centre-left Labour party led by Chris Hipkins.

A TVNZ poll released October 27 shows a narrow gap between the primary contenders, with National polling at 29% and Labour at 27%. While the right-wing bloc maintains a lead over the left, neither side holds a clear parliamentary majority if the centrist Opportunity party crosses the 5% threshold. Opportunity currently polls at 6%, positioning it as a potential kingmaker in the Mixed-Member Proportional system.

Luxon is campaigning for another three-year term to implement economic reforms, while Hipkins has emphasized the importance of voter turnout following the forced resignation of a Labour candidate linked to gang members. Voters are primarily focused on unemployment, healthcare, and the rising cost of living. Advance voting began on October 26, and the Electoral Commission is scheduled to declare official results on November 27. In the event of a deadlock, the current government will operate under a caretaker convention, restricting the introduction of new policies until a new government is formed.
