Sorin Grindeanu Rejects Alliance Offer From Far-Right AUR
Social Democratic Party leader Sorin Grindeanu rejected a governing alliance offer from the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians to resolve Romania's political deadlock.
The far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) offered to support a government led by Sorin Grindeanu to resolve the political deadlock following the collapse of Romania's previous coalition. AUR leader George Simion proposed the alliance on the condition that AUR secure the presidency of the Senate, a role that serves as interim head of state should the presidency become vacant.
Grindeanu rejected the offer, stating he lacks confidence in Simion and ruling out any governing alliance with AUR as long as Simion remains the party's leader. He further dismissed suggestions that the Social Democratic Party would support suspending President Nicușor Dan to facilitate a change in leadership, stating he sees no reason for the president's suspension.
