Hollywood Blockbusters Drive Surge in Indian Cinema Shares

Indian cinema operator shares rose after Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey delivered record-breaking opening weekend performances in the country.

Shares of Indian cinema operators increased following the successful opening of the Hollywood films Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. PVR Inox Ltd., the largest multiplex firm in India, saw its share price rise by nearly 18% in July with further gains reported on Monday. Smaller operators including Cineline India Ltd. and Mukta Arts Ltd. also experienced stock growth.

Sony Pictures Entertainment reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed over 2.2 billion rupees, or approximately $23 million, in India. This performance established the film as the largest opening weekend of the year and the second-highest in Hollywood history. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey further bolstered theater growth, earning more than $264 million globally during its opening weekend.

These trends indicate growing investor confidence in the ability of major international releases to attract audiences back to theaters. The surge follows a period of uneven box office performance and a lackluster 2025 for both Hindi and regional cinema.
