Mayor Zohran Mamdani Rejects DSA Defund Police Platform

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani distanced himself from the Democratic Socialists of America by affirming the necessity of police, prisons, and jails.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly distanced himself from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) policing platform during a SiriusXM interview on August 6, 2026. While the DSA platform advocates for defunding the police and the release of all incarcerated people, Mamdani stated that police, prisons, and jails are necessary to deliver safety and justice.

Mamdani praised the New York City Police Department for achieving the lowest levels of murders and shootings in recorded history over the first seven months of the year. He noted that he wants to ensure safety is not delivered "at the expense of justice."

Despite campaign promises to ban the gang database and transform public safety, the mayor has retained Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and has not implemented several of his proposed policing reforms. This shift has drawn criticism from his political base, including the NYC-DSA, which previously condemned a proposal by the mayor to increase the NYPD headcount by 580 officers.
