Pakistan Bans Al Jazeera and Restricts Foreign Media Coverage

The Government of Pakistan has banned the international broadcaster Al Jazeera and restricted digital access to various news platforms following reports of police brutality and rigged assembly elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). On August 3, 2026, Al Jazeera's English-language website became inaccessible across the country. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting accused the network of "yellow journalism" and "selective reporting," claiming it used scripted statements from polling stations in Muzaffarabad to misrepresent the electoral process and serve external actors.

These restrictions coincide with a broader crackdown on digital media. An Islamabad judicial magistrate court previously ordered the blocking of YouTube channels linked to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and critical journalists. To further limit coverage, the government now requires international journalists to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to report outside the cities of Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad.

The measures follow violent unrest in PoK that has persisted since June. The Joint Awami Action Committee, which described the elections as a "farce," released footage of security forces assaulting civilians. Reports indicate that the Pakistani Rangers and Frontier Corps fired on unarmed protesters at Lal Chowk in Muzaffarabad. Death toll estimates vary, with the Human Rights Council of PoJK reporting 80 fatalities, while other sources cite at least 50 deaths in recent days.
