90% of VMware Users Seek Alternatives Amid Rising Costs
Rimini Street and Unisphere Research report that 90% of VMware users are considering alternatives due to rising licensing costs and the end of perpetual license support.
A global survey conducted by Unisphere Research for Rimini Street, Inc. reveals that 90% of VMware users are considering alternatives to the platform. The study of nearly 300 executives and IT professionals indicates that rising licensing costs and the termination of perpetual license support are the primary drivers of this shift, with 73% of respondents prioritizing cost savings.
To reduce dependency on a single provider, 60% of organizations are considering multi-hypervisor strategies and 47% favor hybrid setups combining hypervisors and containers. Approximately 48% of respondents have no plans to migrate assets to VMware Cloud Foundation. Additionally, 66% of users are utilizing or considering third-party support to extend the life of their existing investments. Security concerns also play a role, as 77% of security leaders seek real-time threat visibility beyond the patching program provided by Broadcom Inc.
Keith Costello, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Rimini Street, stated that the findings reinforce the need for vendor-independent strategies. Joe McKendrick, lead analyst at Unisphere Research, characterized the trend as a broader effort by enterprises to maintain continuity for mission-critical systems and modernize at a pace that fits their own business requirements.
