Microsoft Launches Pay-As-You-Go Xbox Cloud Gaming Model

Microsoft is decoupling cloud gaming from Game Pass by introducing paid hourly bundles for non-subscribers and monthly streaming limits for existing members.

Microsoft has launched a preview for Xbox Insiders that allows users to purchase cloud gaming playtime without an Xbox Game Pass subscription. The new pay-as-you-go model, called Xbox Cloud Playtime, offers ad-free, high-quality streaming in bundles: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99. These hours do not expire until used and allow non-subscribers to stream digital games they already own. A free, ad-supported tier with lower quality and longer wait times is also being tested. The service is scheduled for a broader public rollout in November.

Simultaneously, the company is introducing monthly cloud gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers starting in November. Limits are set at 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and 5 hours for Essential tiers. Users who exceed these limits must purchase additional playtime via the Xbox Store. Microsoft reports that these limits will affect approximately 4% of the Game Pass user base.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated that skyrocketing chip costs and rising hardware prices make traditional consoles increasingly unaffordable, necessitating "radically different business models." This strategic shift occurs amid a broader restructuring under Sharma, which has included the closure of several development studios and more than 3,000 layoffs.
