Apple Geoblocks ByteDance Apps for United States iOS Users

Apple has implemented technical restrictions that block iOS users in the United States from downloading or updating applications developed by ByteDance. The geoblocking measures utilize GPS, SIM, and Wi-Fi data to identify user locations. Affected applications include Douyin, Doubao, Fanqie Novel, CapCut, Lemon8, Lark, Hypic, and MARVEL SNAP.

These restrictions comply with the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which prohibits the distribution of apps majority-controlled by ByteDance within U.S. borders. While the blocks were reported in March 2026, an archived Apple Support document indicates the restrictions actually began on January 19, 2025. Users with Chinese App Store accounts have also encountered error messages stating the apps are unavailable in their region.

TikTok remains available on the U.S. App Store because its operations transitioned to the TikTok USDS Joint Venture group following a divestiture agreement with the Trump administration. For other blocked apps, existing installations remain on devices, but users are unable to redownload them, make in-app purchases, or receive security and performance updates. Neither Apple nor ByteDance has issued a comment on the matter.
