German Navy Successfully Tests Israeli LORA Ballistic Missiles

The German Navy successfully completed a secret dual trial of the Israeli-made LORA (Long Range Attack) ballistic missile system on September 2, 2026. Launched from the frigate Sachsen-Anhalt in the North Atlantic between Ireland and Iceland, both missiles struck their targets with precision. This trial marks the first time Germany has tested ballistic missile capabilities, which operate at higher speeds than the cruise missiles currently in its arsenal.

Vice-Admiral Jan Christian Kaack stated the achievement represents a new chapter in deterrence and defense readiness at sea, noting that the system's range—which exceeds 500 kilometers—surpasses previous capabilities. The test was conducted under the Operational Experimentation (OPEX) program as part of the Marine 2035 and Beyond initiative to prepare the fleet for future security threats.

This rearmament effort follows concerns over Russian aggression, including a recent attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport attributed to Russia. The potential acquisition of the LORA system, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, would complement Germany's existing Taurus cruise missiles and planned purchases of U.S. Tomahawk missiles. The trial further signals deepening defense ties between Berlin and Jerusalem, coinciding with Germany's deployment of the Arrow 3 system and Israel's acquisition of German-built submarines, such as the INS Drakon.
