Hang Seng Indexes Co. Expands Tech Index to 50 Firms

Hang Seng Indexes Co. plans to expand the Hang Seng Tech Index to 50 constituents to better incorporate AI and robotics firms.

Hang Seng Indexes Co. is overhauling the Hang Seng Tech Index to increase its representation of the artificial intelligence and robotics sectors. The index compiler will expand the number of constituents from 30 to 50, introducing a new thematic framework that covers six main areas: digital platforms, AI, advanced hardware, robotics, cloud computing, and frontier technology. To capture smaller, high-growth firms more quickly, the company will allow 10 members to be selected based on revenue growth rather than market value.

The revamp also expands sub-themes from 16 to 24, adding specialized fields such as aerospace and quantum computing. These changes follow investor complaints that the benchmark has been too slow to include pioneering Chinese technology companies.

Hang Seng Indexes Co. is currently seeking stakeholder feedback through September 18. The company expects to finalize revisions by the end of September, with the new structure scheduled for implementation during the December 2026 rebalancing.
