PMA and ILWU Extend Talks to Avert Port Strike
The Pacific Maritime Association and ILWU Local 26 extended contract negotiations to November 4, preventing a strike at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 extended contract negotiations through 5 p.m. Pacific Time on November 4, averting a strike previously threatened for November 1. The dispute involves approximately 250 maritime watchmen responsible for security duties at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Although the number of affected workers is small, the Pacific Maritime Association warned that a walkout could halt vessel, yard, and gate operations because other union workers are unlikely to cross picket lines. The watchmen in question operate at terminals handling 85% of cargo at the Port of Long Beach and 33% at the Port of Los Angeles.
The parties have been negotiating since the previous contract expired in July 2025. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is currently assisting the process to reach a final agreement.
