VA Awards $1.17 Billion to Combat Veteran Homelessness

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a record $1.17 billion in grants to 680 organizations nationwide to combat veteran homelessness for fiscal year 2027. The funding, scheduled to begin October 1, 2026, is distributed through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, which focuses on rapid re-housing and eviction prevention, and the Grant and Per Diem program, which provides transitional housing for women, elderly, and chronically ill veterans.

State-level allocations include $43.27 million for 21 organizations in Georgia, $38 million for 22 in Oregon, $35 million for 25 in North Carolina, $32.8 million for 17 in Kentucky, and $24.4 million for 19 in Michigan. Additional funding was awarded to South Carolina, exceeding $17 million, Oklahoma at $11 million, Kansas at $10.2 million, and South Dakota at $2.9 million.

VA officials emphasized that these grants strengthen partnerships with community organizations to reach veterans where they are. This national investment follows a fiscal year 2025 milestone where the department placed 51,936 homeless veterans into permanent housing, the highest annual total in seven years.
