BMW Group and Toyota Launch Renewable Gasoline Pilot in Spain

BMW Group and Toyota partnered with Repsol S.A. and Bosch to test 100 percent renewable gasoline in 20 unmodified vehicles across Spain.

Automakers BMW Group and Toyota, in partnership with Repsol S.A. and Bosch, launched a six-month pilot program in Spain in early July 2026. The project tests the real-world viability of using 100 percent renewable gasoline to decarbonize internal-combustion engines without requiring vehicle modifications.

The initiative employs a fleet of 20 passenger and fleet vehicles, including Toyota and Lexus models, running exclusively on Repsol S.A.'s Nexa 95 fuel. This "drop-in" replacement is derived from organic waste and RED-compliant feedstocks, such as biomass, tallow, and used cooking oil. Repsol S.A. claims the fuel offers a 70 percent reduction in emissions compared to conventional gasoline and is currently available at 1,600 of its service stations.

To ensure the integrity of the trial, Bosch is utilizing its "Digital Fuel Twin" tracking system. This technology certifies fuel origin and validates refueling data through vehicle telemetry and transaction records.

The partners intend to use the resulting data to influence European policymakers. By advocating for "technology openness," the companies argue that renewable fuels can complement electrification to help the European Union meet its 2035 emissions targets and decarbonize existing vehicles already on the road.
