India Faces 10% Food Inflation Amid Severe Water Shortages

India is battling rising food prices and agricultural distress caused by El Niño and weak monsoons, prompting government imports and expected interest rate hikes.

India is experiencing prolonged food inflation driven by a severe El Niño and below-average monsoon rains. These weather patterns have created critical water shortages for farmers preparing winter crops, leading to price spikes for staples including wheat, rice, milk, poultry, sugar, and pulses. Protein inflation has become particularly acute as feed and fodder costs rise.

India Ratings and Research projects that food inflation could reach approximately 10% during the October-December quarter. In response to a domestic sugar shortfall, the Government of India authorized duty-free imports of 1 million metric tons of sugar. However, the effectiveness of these imports is limited by a weakening rupee and high global market prices.

To counter broader price pressures, the Reserve Bank of India raised interest rates in October. Economists expect the central bank to implement further hikes of 50-75 basis points in December to stabilize the economy.
