Pakistan Finance Minister Seeks Global Investment in Bangkok
Muhammad Aurangzeb met with US, Canadian, and global financial leaders in Bangkok to secure investment and discuss Pakistan's economic stabilization strategies.
Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a series of high-level meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, during the 2026 World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings to attract foreign capital and stabilize the national economy. Aurangzeb met with US Treasury Under Secretary Erin Browne to discuss Pakistan's economic outlook, reporting foreign exchange reserves of approximately $21.6 billion and a strategy focused on export-led growth, tax reforms, and debt sustainability to achieve a BB sovereign rating.
To diversify financing, Aurangzeb highlighted a $3 billion Eurobond issuance from September and plans to utilize Sukuk and Panda bonds. He also engaged with global financial institutions, including Lazard, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley Capital International, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, to explore privatization, infrastructure financing, and mining investments. Additionally, he discussed a proposed Lifeline Fund for climate finance with the CVF-V20 Secretariat.
In separate talks with Canada's Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai, Aurangzeb focused on expanding partnerships in agriculture, agrotechnology, and food security. The two officials specifically discussed the financing and security review of the Barrick mining project and the need to accelerate an investment protection agreement to encourage Canadian capital. The discussions also covered cooperation in artificial intelligence, IT services, and increasing remittances from the Pakistani diaspora in Canada.
