Pentagon Increases Combat Pay Amid Ongoing War With Iran

The United States Department of Defense increased combat pay for troops and announced plans for a new 25,000-person military base in the Middle East.

The United States Department of Defense increased combat pay for troops effective October 1, 2026, marking the first such adjustment since 2002. Hostile Fire Pay doubled to $450 per month, and Imminent Danger Pay rose to $275 per month, though Hardship Duty Pay-Location was reduced from $150 to $100 per month.

These changes follow the start of a war with Iran on February 28, 2026, which began with a sneak attack by the U.S. and Israel. Imminent Danger Pay now extends to 58 locations, including Cyprus, Turkey, Diego Garcia, and various Arab states hosting U.S. bases. While the Pentagon reports 19 deaths and 861 wounded, a Washington Post report suggests the actual death toll may be higher.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth further signaled a long-term military presence in the region by announcing plans for a new self-sufficient military base. The proposed facility will be capable of housing 25,000 troops.
