Russia and US Amplify Alberta Separatism to Undermine Canada

A joint report by DisinfoWatch, the Global Centre for Democratic Resilience, and the University of Regina alleges that Russia and the United States are amplifying Alberta separatist narratives to erode Canadian unity. Russian efforts are described as covert, utilizing the Storm-1516 network and Pravda News Network to portray separatism as a popular movement. Conversely, U.S. involvement is characterized as overt, involving pro-Trump influencers and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who spoke favorably of separatism.

These activities coincide with a citizen-led petition that may trigger an independence referendum as early as October 19, 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for the U.S. to respect Canadian sovereignty following reports of separatist discussions with the Trump administration. In the Alberta legislature, NDP member David Shepherd urged the government to protect the vote's integrity, though Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis initially denied having credible information regarding foreign interference.

Parallel to these foreign threats, the Alberta NDP alleges that associates of Premier Danielle Smith attended a meeting with the Centurion Project, a separatist group accused of illegally obtaining a voter list containing data on millions of citizens. Former Premier Jason Kenney stated his personal information was shared publicly at the event and is considering legal action. Premier Smith denied knowledge of the breach, asserting a caucus staffer attended the meeting without knowing the data was illegal. In response to these security concerns, Smith is seeking higher security clearance for CSIS briefings, and Elections Alberta is launching an Information Integrity Unit.
