Citadel Acquires Public Portfolio of Collapsing AI Fund Situational Awareness

Citadel purchased the public equity holdings of Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund after the firm lost approximately $35 billion in July due to high leverage and AI stock routs.

The AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered a massive financial collapse in July 2026, losing approximately $35 billion in a single month. Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, saw the fund's assets plummet from a peak of $45 billion to roughly $10 billion following a sharp downturn in AI infrastructure stocks—including Micron and CoreWeave—and failed short positions against software companies like Adobe.

Extreme leverage triggered margin calls from prime brokers, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America, forcing a rushed liquidation of the fund's public equity book. On July 30, 2026, Citadel LLC, led by Kenneth C. Griffin, acquired the bulk of these liquid assets at a steep discount, beating out competing bids from firms such as Millennium Management. The transaction is considered one of the largest rushed equity transfers in Wall Street history.

Despite the meltdown, Situational Awareness retains approximately $10 billion in assets, primarily consisting of private investments including a $5 billion stake in AI developer Anthropic. Aschenbrenner, who had reported a 439 percent return for the first half of the year, took full responsibility for the decline in a letter to clients, though he partially attributed the crash to targeted short sellers. The fund is expected to transition into a private holding company focusing on its remaining private assets.
