Apple Removes High-Memory Mac Configurations Amid Global DRAM Crisis

Apple Inc. removed several high-memory configurations for the Mac mini and Mac Studio from its U.S. online store over the weekend of April 11-12, 2026. Mac mini models with 32GB and 64GB RAM and Mac Studio variants with 128GB and 256GB RAM are now listed as currently unavailable.

These removals follow a series of restrictive supply measures, including the elimination of the 512GB RAM upgrade for the Mac Studio and a 25% price increase for the 256GB upgrade. The company attributes the shortage to a global DRAM crisis fueled by AI infrastructure expansion from firms such as Anthropic and CoreWeave, as well as rising demand for local AI tools like OpenClaw.

Reports also suggest the supply constraints may be strategic. The company might be limiting availability to clear existing inventory in preparation for a potential 2026 hardware refresh featuring M5 chips.
