UK Government Plans 1,250-Person Asylum Site at Bicester Garrison

The Government of the United Kingdom plans to house approximately 1,250 single adult male asylum seekers at Site A of the Bicester Garrison, a former Ministry of Defence site located between Piddington and Upper Arncott in Oxfordshire. The Home Office introduced the proposal as part of a wider June initiative to utilize three former military sites to reduce the cost of housing asylum seekers in hotels. The government states the site will be self-contained with 24/7 security, CCTV, and a strict no-alcohol policy.

Local residents and officials have reacted with strong opposition, culminating in a peaceful picnic protest on July 26, 2026. Opponents argue the site is unsuitable, noting it has been abandoned for over 20 years and lacks essential sewage, electricity, and water infrastructure. Community members expressed specific concerns regarding the site's proximity to a primary school, playground, and nature reserve. The Cherwell District Council criticized the lack of consultation, while the Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner warned the facility would increase pressure on local policing.

Political figures have condemned the plan, with Liberal Democrat MP Calum Miller stating the government provided no credible explanation for the site's selection. Reform UK councillor Michael Wilson also demanded proper consultation for the community. Adding to the tension, major planning decisions in the area are now routed directly to the government's planning inspectorate, bypassing the local council. Meanwhile, the charity Asylum Welcome argued that the isolated military setting would worsen the isolation of the migrants.
