AI Experts Urge US to Pace Superintelligence Development
Researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Deepmind call for international governance and a licensing process to prevent catastrophic AI intelligence explosions.
A group of 1,367 researchers and engineers from leading frontier AI labs, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, published an open letter warning that AI capabilities are accelerating beyond human control. The signers, who include CEOs and chief scientists, argue that the world lacks credible plans for managing superintelligent systems, creating a risk of a catastrophic "intelligence explosion."
To mitigate this risk, the group urges the United States government to lead an international effort to develop technical measures and governance tools to deliberately pace the development of automated AI. Their proposed framework includes a formal licensing process, the registration of AI systems, and the establishment of enforceable international agreements.
The experts specifically highlight the need for coordination between the United States and China to end a competitive arms race they characterize as a risk to human existence. As part of this effort, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis indicated a willingness to halt AI development if their competitors agreed to similar restrictions.
