U.S. Bitcoin Miners Pivot to AI Computing Amid Record Hashrate
JPMorgan reports that U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners reached record market capitalizations in August 2025 by diversifying into high-performance computing to offset declining mining profits.
The Bitcoin network hashrate reached record highs in August 2025, averaging 949 EH/s. According to reports from JPMorgan, mining profitability declined during this period as Bitcoin prices dropped from an all-time high of $124,285. Daily block reward revenue fell by 4% from July, and gross profit decreased 7% to $31,900 per EH/s.
Despite these headwinds, the market capitalization of U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners surged, with one report citing a 23% increase to $7.4 billion and another noting an aggregate peak exceeding $39 billion. This growth is driven by a strategic pivot toward high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence to diversify revenue streams.
Several companies are executing this transition. TeraWulf Inc. secured a colocation deal with Fluidstack, resulting in an 83% gain in its market value, while IREN expanded its GPU fleet. Hut 8 Mining Corp. announced plans to develop 1.53 gigawatts of new capacity across four U.S. sites for non-mining purposes. HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. is implementing a dual business model that scales Bitcoin production alongside HPC to capitalize on the increasing demand for compute power.
