Aldi UK and The Kroger Co. Lower Grocery Prices
Aldi UK records price drops in the UK while The Kroger Co. leads affordability in the US, reflecting a broader trend of corporate and government price reductions.
Retailers in the United Kingdom and United States are implementing aggressive price-reduction strategies to capture market share. In the UK, Aldi UK is the only one of the six largest supermarkets to record a decrease in average grocery prices for three consecutive quarters. Its average unit price fell from £1.63 in late 2025 to £1.57 in the second quarter of 2026, while competitors including Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Lidl saw increases. Aldi UK supported these cuts by investing £60 million into summer essentials and opening Britain's largest food distribution center in Leicestershire to improve efficiency.
In the United States, a study by Restaurant Furniture Plus found that The Kroger Co. offers the lowest overall prices on everyday store-brand staples among four major chains, with a total basket cost of $30. Walmart ranked second, while Aldi Inc. ranked third. The Kroger Co. CEO Greg Foran stated the company is offsetting these lower prices by reducing internal expenses through direct merchandise imports and expanded technology use.
These corporate moves align with broader economic trends and government interventions. In the UK, food price inflation eased to 1.7% in June, the lowest level since August 2024. Simultaneously, the Greek government launched a National Initiative under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to lower supermarket prices on essential goods by 5% to 20% through December 2026.
