Germany Unemployment Rises to 2.996 Million in August

Germany's number of unemployed people rose by 4,000 in August to 2.996 million in seasonally adjusted terms. This increase was smaller than the 5,000 predicted by analysts, and the seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained stable at 6.4 percent. The overall unadjusted figure rose by 36,260 to reach 3.061 million.

Andrea Nahles, head of the labour office, stated that the labour market continues to show a subdued trend with little momentum beyond typical seasonal patterns. Despite the rise in unemployment, the labour office registered 656,000 job openings in August, an increase of 25,000 compared to the previous year.

Concurrent data from the Ifo Institute for Economic Research indicated a slowdown in job cuts. The institute also reported a higher-than-expected rise in its business climate index, which was driven by stronger exports and industrial production.
