Moldova Elects Vasile Tofan as Prime Minister

The Parliament of Moldova elected Vasile Tofan as prime minister on July 21, 2026, following a nine-hour session. The 44-year-old financier and former partner at Horizon Capital secured the position with a vote of 53 to 21, backed by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity. Tofan replaces Alexandru Munteanu, who resigned suddenly after eight months in office.

Tofan presented a government program titled "The European Economy, an Effective State," which focuses on accelerating economic growth, reducing budget deficits, and privatizing state-owned companies. A central pillar of his administration is advancing Moldova's integration into the European Union. Tofan aims to secure an accession deal by 2028 and achieve full membership by 2030, building on the candidate status the country received in 2022 and the opening of membership talks in June 2026.

President Maia Sandu nominated Tofan and expects to formally appoint the new Cabinet once ministers are sworn in. The appointment comes as Moldova and Ukraine continue EU accession negotiations regarding democratic values and foreign security policies. Tofan, a political newcomer, stated he does not intend to pursue a long-term political career but aims to serve his mandate with integrity.
