North Korea Launches Missiles After Testing Dispersal Warheads

North Korea launched several missiles toward the Sea of Japan on November 4 following a series of strategic cruise and cluster bomb tests.

The Government of North Korea launched several missiles toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the projectiles were fired from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province. While the specific type of missiles remains unclear, the launches follow a period of intensified weapons testing.

On November 2, North Korea test-fired strategic cruise missiles equipped with a dispersal warhead capable of destroying target areas of 5 to 6 hectares. These tests focused on vertical strike capabilities and terminal maneuverability. This followed a separate test of cluster bombs for tactical ballistic missiles conducted on October 31.

North Korean officials stated the development of these systems is necessary to defend national security and deter external threats, with plans to field various cluster warheads by the end of the year. Kim Yo Jong, deputy department director of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, described the situation along the southern border as highly unstable.

South Korean and United States militaries monitored the launch preparations and are coordinating to analyze the missile specifications. South Korean military officials stated they will continue joint combat readiness exercises with the U.S. to respond to potential provocations.
