Kennedy Center Board Member Accuses Senator Whitehouse of Political Theater

Kennedy Center board member Brian Ballard criticized Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for alleging institutional mismanagement while refusing invitations for in-person meetings.

A conflict has emerged between the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse over allegations of institutional failure. Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, claims the center is using renovation closures as a pretext to hide a collapse in bookings, attendance, and revenue. He has further questioned the fiduciary implications of efforts to rename the facility.

In response, board member Brian Ballard accused Whitehouse of engaging in political theater and noted that the senator has ignored multiple invitations for in-person meetings issued by Executive Director Matt Floca. Ballard defended the institution, stating that the Audit and Finance Committee meets regularly and that the brief suspension of guided tours was limited to administrative reviews and sprinkler maintenance.

These disputes follow a May federal court ruling that blocked the Trump administration's attempts to rename the facility to the Trump Kennedy Center and its plan to close the institution for a two-year renovation.
