Indian Leaders Commemorate 84th Anniversary of Quit India Movement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian political leaders commemorated the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on August 9, 2026. In a series of posts on X, Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the participants of the 1942 uprising, stating that the movement "infused new energy into our freedom struggle" and that the courage of those involved remains an inspiration for every Indian.

In West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari also used social media to express gratitude to the freedom fighters, noting that those who made the "ultimate sacrifice" provided the foundation for a modern independent India.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee organized a commemorative program at its Bengaluru state headquarters. The event was attended by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, KPCC President BK Hariprasad, State Minister Ramalinga Reddy, and former minister Rani Satish, alongside various party functionaries and MLAs.

The Quit India Movement, or Bharat Chodo Andolan, was launched by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress on August 9, 1942, at Gawalia Tank in Mumbai. The movement demanded an end to British colonial rule during the Second World War and is remembered annually as August Kranti Day.
