COP17 Biodiversity Summit Opens in Yerevan to Review Targets

Nearly 200 nations gathered in Armenia for COP17 to address failing biodiversity targets and a critical funding gap for global nature conservation.

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) opened on October 18, 2026, in Yerevan, Armenia. More than 10,000 delegates gathered to conduct the first global review of the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, opened the summit and acknowledged that nations are not yet on track to meet their goals. A United Nations report released shortly before the event indicates that progress is uneven, with fewer than half of the 23 biodiversity targets on track. Delegates are now working to finalize the Yerevan Pathway to accelerate implementation and mobilize $200 billion annually in biodiversity finance.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres characterized the current environmental destruction as a "war on nature" and criticized governments for subsidizing fossil fuels. Tensions at the summit center on a significant funding gap for developing countries and the slow reform of harmful subsidies. While wealthy nations are urging larger emerging economies like China to contribute more, others are focusing on private capital.

The conference occurs amid local controversy over the Armenian government's environmental record. Greenpeace and other civil society organizations have condemned Prime Minister Pashinyan's recent inauguration of the Amulsar gold mine, arguing the project contradicts the conservation goals of the summit.
