Trump Administration Reports Record Low Border Crossings and Mass Deportations

The Donald Trump administration has implemented a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration, resulting in the lowest number of southwest border apprehensions in 55 years. The Department of Homeland Security reported that fiscal year 2025 concluded with 237,565 unlawful crossings, a figure 87% lower than the average of the previous four fiscal years. This decline coincides with the elimination of the "Catch and Release" policy; federal officials noted that zero migrants were released into the U.S. interior for five consecutive months ending in September 2025.

Since January 2025, more than 2 million illegal migrants have left the United States, including 493,000 formal deportations and 1.6 million self-deportations. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is on track to deport 600,000 individuals by the end of the year. To sustain these efforts, the administration announced plans to build nearly 10 miles of new border wall near San Diego, funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which allocates over $46 billion to Customs and Border Protection through 2029.

Enforcement has escalated in sanctuary cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, leading to a 1,000% increase in assaults against ICE officers and a sniper attack on a facility in Dallas. The administration has also deployed the Texas National Guard to Illinois. In Leominster, Massachusetts, agents faced allegations of using a five-year-old girl as bait to lure her father during an arrest, a claim the Department of Homeland Security has denied.
