Trump Administration Shifts Undocumented Children to Texas Facilities

The Trump administration has begun directing the majority of undocumented children in federal custody to Texas. Data from bklg.org shows that over 90% of children placed in immigration court proceedings during August were sent to Texas, where government facilities frequently lack state licensing and children have lower rates of legal representation than the national average.

Simultaneously, the Office of Refugee Resettlement is seeking contracts for emergency influx facilities with up to 3,000 beds. This procurement effort occurs while the current network capacity is operating at only 27%. While agency officials state these facilities are intended to manage border surges, critics argue the move indicates plans for mass internal apprehension and rapid repatriation flights.

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar criticized the administration's treatment of children and the lack of oversight, suggesting that Texas officials are willing accomplices in the strategy. Roxana Avila-Cimpeanu of the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project warned that congregating children in Texas, one of the harshest jurisdictions for immigration cases, facilitates rapid deportation via nearby planes.
