Putin Threatens Retaliation After UK Seizes Russian Oil Tanker

Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to respond in kind after the United Kingdom seized the Smyrtos, a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker. Putin characterized the seizure as piracy and banditry, warning that Russia might retaliate in any location it deems appropriate, not necessarily limited to the waters where raids on Russian vessels occur.

Royal Marines Commandos intercepted and boarded the Smyrtos in the English Channel in June. The vessel is currently detained near Weymouth, and its captain, Ajay Pant, faces charges of breaching sanctions by delivering prohibited Russian oil. The UK Ministry of Defence asserts that Russia utilizes a fleet of over 700 vessels to evade sanctions and fund its military operations in Ukraine.

The seizure occurs as the European Union intensifies pressure on the dark fleet, sanctioning more than 630 vessels as of mid-August 2026. Viktor Liina, Commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet, accused Britain and France of operating their own shadow fleets while maintaining that Russia has the capacity to detain vessels from unfriendly states.
