US and Ukraine Face Critical Patriot Missile Shortages

The United States and Ukraine are facing a critical shortage of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors, though the causes of their respective deficits differ. Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the shortage could lead to a winter crisis for Ukraine's power grid as Russia intensifies bombardments using high-speed Iskander ballistic missiles. In response, Zelensky shifted military strategy toward destroying Russian missile launchers on the ground to reduce strikes on cities and critical infrastructure.

The United States depleted its own stockpiles during a brief conflict with Iran from February to April 2026, where expensive Patriot missiles were used to intercept low-cost drones. This depletion has raised concerns regarding U.S. readiness for a potential conflict with China in the western Pacific.

To address the gap, the United States Army is attempting to scale production through a $12 billion order for 2,798 missiles. Additionally, defense contractor Lockheed Martin has announced a lower-cost ACE version of the missile to mitigate the financial and logistical burden of intercepting cheaper threats.
