Trump Administration Requests $67 Billion for War in Iran

The Donald Trump administration is requesting between $67 billion and $70 billion in supplemental defense funding to sustain the U.S. war in Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine testified before Congress on July 21, warning that munitions and reserves could be depleted by mid-August. The funds are intended to cover Operation Epic Fury, strengthen U.S. bases, and deter Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

The funding request follows a period of escalation, including ten consecutive nights of U.S. bombing operations in Iran ending July 20. Since the conflict began in February, 17 American troops have died, with over 100 injured in July alone. Recent fatalities include Sgt. Michael Swinton in Iraq, and Isabella Gonzales and Tyler Feehan in Jordan. President Trump stated on social media that Iran would pay for the killing of American soldiers.

The defense request is part of a broader $95 billion GOP budget package that includes $11.1 billion for farmers, Ebola prevention in Africa, and the SAVE America Act. To secure the funds, Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance held marathon meetings with House Republicans and hosted members at Camp David. While the House Budget Committee advanced the proposal, some GOP lawmakers and Democrats remain skeptical, demanding spending offsets or seeking to limit war powers. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Hegseth for withholding casualty numbers while promoting testosterone screenings for troops.
