U.S. Deports Chinese Student Amid Visa Screening Disputes

U.S. customs officials deported a Chinese philosophy student in Houston, highlighting tensions over the screening of Chinese scholars and students entering the United States.

U.S. customs officials deported a 22-year-old Chinese philosophy student, identified as Gu, after detaining and interrogating him for several hours at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Despite holding a full scholarship to the University of Houston and a clean record from Cornell University, Gu was banned from the United States for five years.

Donald Trump has expressed a desire to welcome Chinese students to support American schools, stating that the U.S. is honored to have them. However, he has simultaneously emphasized the necessity of careful screening to determine who is entering the country.

The deportation follows allegations from the Chinese Embassy that more than 10 Chinese students and scholars have faced discriminatory interrogation and repatriation under the guise of visa issues or national security. The embassy characterized these actions as politically driven and selective law enforcement that causes financial and mental harm to scholars. United States Customs and Border Protection has not commented on the specific case or provided data on the total number of repatriated students.
